About Coimbatore

Coimbatore, popularly known as the Manchester of South India is the fourth largest and largest non-metro city in South India. Known for its pleasant climate and Siruvani, second sweetest water in the world. Coimbatore city is the head-quarters for the Kongu belt that comprises of Nilgris, Thirupur, Erode, Salem and Namakkal districts. Coimbatore along with Kongu region contribute nearly 40% of the state's total GDP.

Location

Tourism

The location of the city acts as a transit gateway for many tourist attractions apart from having its own places of interest. Within the city, GD Museum that contains the history of industrial development, Tamilnadu Agricultural University Botanical Garden that displays numerous species of plants, VOC Park Zoo that attracts kids. With a short drive popular tourist spots like Maruthamalai temple, Kovai Kutralam water falls, Vellingiri hills, Isha Yoga, Anaikatti, Valparai are considered as must visit for all tourists entering the city.

Ooty, the Queen of hills is located on a four hour drive from city. Ooty along with its aurrounding locations like Conoor, Kothagiri and Gudalur has numerous tourist attractions. Moonar which is located in Kerala is also close proximity from Coimbatore.


Religion

Few important religious importance places in Coimbatore are The Maruthamalai Temple, Koniyamman Temple, Thandumariamman Temple, Eachanai and Puliyakulam Temples, Kalakaleshwarar Temple that has the largest Datchinamoorthy in Asia are located in the close vicinity of the city. Athar Jamad Masjid in Oppanakara Street is one of the oldest and biggest masjids in Tamil Nadu.

Transportation

Coimbatore has its own airport, Coimbatore International Airport located within city limits has International connections to Singapore, Sharjah and Colombo. Domestic connections to all major metros of the country like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.

Trains are available to Coimbatore from all towns in South India and lies on the mid-way of Chennai - Trivandrum Trunk route on which more than 50% of Southern Railway trains are operated.

Intra city transportation is currently handles by city buses with hub in Gandhipuram, connects all areas in and around the city.

Metro train for the city is in the planning stage.


Shopping

Oppanakara Street and Cross cut Road, acts as the primary shopping destination of the region. Apart from these two DB Road in RS puram is famous for branded shopping. There are numerous shopping malls in Coimbatore including Brookfields Mall, Fun Mall and Prozone Mall. Coimbatore is known for large textile and jewellery showrooms that are located in the above mentioned areas.
